A drip irrigation system, also known as a trickle irrigation system, or low volume irrigation, is a pipe system placed throughout a garden to allow for watering directly to the roots of plants. Though this system may go by several different names, it is one of the most effective ways to water your plants. As you may tell from the title, the system is a low flow of water intended not to overwhelm the plants with overhead watering. Instead, water is slowly applied to the root, allowing for healthier root growth and better aeration. This system is also a cost-effective measure, as it uses less water overall through frequent gentle watering.

There are many irrigation systems to choose from when planning your garden. Of course, depending on your garden’s needs, some systems may be better than others, but here are some reasons to consider a drip irrigation system.

Water Efficiency

When properly installed, a drip irrigation system is more efficient than a sprinkler system. Most gardens can benefit from a drip irrigation system. However, turfgrass and large lawn areas can benefit better from a sprinkler system. These sprinkler systems work by dispelling large amounts of water up into the air to spray large areas. In turn, the water droplets land on top of the plants, not directly onto the roots, wasting gallons of water in the process of evaporation. Therefore, taking a lot more water to get to the roots of the plants, where the water is most needed.

Savings

With water efficiency also comes savings on water, as less water is wasted to evaporation and vast dispersion. On average, the drip system uses 30% – 50% less water than other systems. This system also prevents over-watering, which is not good for the plants or your pocket.

Easy Setup

Setting up your drip irrigation system is simple when well planned and executed properly:

  1. Planning is key in measuring your space and having the right amount of materials.
  2. Gather all materials and have them on hand. Once preparation is completed, setup is a relatively straightforward process. This system is also considerably easy to expand if necessary.
  3. Connect drip lines throughout garden beds and get ready to reap the benefits!

Plant Health

As we have covered, the drip system delivers water directly to the base of the plant and its roots; by doing so, this eliminates overwatering on the leaves, which can cause mildew and diseases that may spread by water on leaves.

Plants that tend to work really well with this irrigation system are

Fruity bushes: Fruit trees and bushes generally need a generous amount of water. The water captured by these plants plays a vital role by providing the water to bear juicy fruits and keep its leaves green and healthy to catch all the delicious sun rays.

Broccoli Cabbage family plants: benefit from a steady water supply during the growing season. You can get as many as four harvests if these plants are given adequate moisture, rich soil, and a cool, moist location.

Newly Planted trees: Newly planted trees benefit significantly from drip systems by encouraging deep rooting through water being directly placed at the base

Tomatoes: Due to their high yield in a short time, tomatoes need regular watering; otherwise, you may find that your plants can run into issues like dropped blossoms, cracked skin are among the most common culprits.

Vegetable Gardens: overall, a vegetable garden needs a lot of attention, along with consistent hydration. A drip system allows for constant deep watering, helping your garden grow and prosper.

Troubleshooting

Unlike other systems, the drip system is easily repaired. The main issues in this system are punctures or holes in tubing, blockages, and seasonal disruptions.

Punctures and holes in the tubing can be repaired or replaced with the damaged tubing. Finally, connect instead of the entire line. The line is usually easily repaired by patching the hole, whether damaged by a curious critter or a gardening tool. Blockages can usually be fixed the same way, and be sure to winterize your system to prevent seasonal disruptions.

If you are an avid DIYer and prefer to tackle projects on your own time, installing a drip irrigation system can be very rewarding. When appropriately planned, you can do this system yourself.
